The work behind the licence
Multi-drop rigid work means handball. Cages, pump trucks, tail lifts, cellar drops and a delivery window at every door. Tipper and muckaway work is fewer drops and more yard time. Municipal work is early starts and a fixed round.
Some roles want a HIAB or moffett ticket, which are separate qualifications and worth money. If an advert mentions them, ask whether the employer funds the training or expects you to arrive with it.
Class 2 is also the usual entry point into lorry driving. Plenty of employers take newly passed drivers and put them with a mentor for a fortnight, which is rarer at class 1.
Licence, CPC and pay
Category C, a Driver CPC card and a digital tacho card. Drivers who passed a car test before 1 January 1997 usually hold C1 already, which is the 7.5 tonne entitlement, not class 2.
On pay, the Aspion 2026 HGV driver salary guide puts permanent class 2 roles at around £28,000 to £36,000, with agency work at roughly £16 to £20 an hour. That is a published national guide rather than a local figure, and the advert you apply to carries the only rate that binds anybody.
