Shifts, rates and sites
Distribution centres run continental shifts, four on four off, twilights and permanent nights. The shift allowance is often a large part of the pay, so compare the total package rather than the hourly rate.
Chilled and frozen sites pay more for a reason. Ambient picking, chilled at around two degrees and frozen at minus twenty-five are very different working days, and the kit and break patterns differ with them.
Where it leads
It is one of the most accessible jobs in logistics: no qualifications needed and training on site. Counterbalance and reach truck tickets are the first step and many sites fund them once you are established. From there the routes are VNA, goods in, stock control, team leader and shift manager.
Agency to permanent is the common path onto a large site. Ask early what the qualifying period is and how many temporary workers were made permanent last year.
