Trunking, tramping and store work
Trunking is depot to depot, often nights, usually the same run each shift and home every day. It suits drivers who want predictability and do not want to spend the week away.
Tramping pays more and costs more: you sleep in the cab, your week is set by the planner, and the night out allowance is part of the package rather than a bonus. Store delivery work adds handball, cages and time windows.
Licence, CPC and what employers check
You need category C+E, a valid Driver CPC card with thirty-five hours of periodic training every five years, and a digital tachograph card. Insurers push employers to check points, and six or more starts narrowing your options.
Drivers' hours rules set the shape of the day: nine hours driving, extendable to ten twice a week, with a forty-five minute break split as fifteen then thirty. Infringements follow you, so read the tacho printout before you sign it.
Beyond the paperwork, employers care about tacho discipline and whether you can reverse onto a bay without a banksman. Most of the rest they will train.
