C1, the 1997 rule and Driver CPC
Anyone who passed a car test before 1 January 1997 usually has C1 on their licence already, which is why so many 7.5 tonne drivers never sat a lorry test. Everybody else takes a separate C1 test.
Driving one professionally still needs a Driver CPC card and thirty-five hours of periodic training every five years, plus a digital tachograph card. That catches out drivers who assume grandfather rights cover everything.
What the day involves
Common work includes parcel and pallet delivery, catering and wholesale rounds, furniture and appliance delivery with a two-person crew, and event or equipment moves.
High drop counts, a handheld scanner, a tail lift and a lot of getting in and out of the cab. Weight matters more than it does on a bigger vehicle, because a fully loaded 7.5 tonner is close to its limit and the driver carries that responsibility.
Many drivers use the role as a stepping stone to class 2. Some employers will fund the category C training for a driver who has proved reliable on a C1 round, so it is worth asking.
