What the role carries
You hold clinical accountability with no doctor on site. That is the part nurses moving from hospital find hardest and the part that experienced care home nurses value: assessment, escalation and the judgement about which resident needs a GP call today.
Practically, a shift covers medication rounds, wound and pressure area care, care plan reviews, admissions and discharges, family conversations and the handover that holds it all together. Nursing homes usually run long days and nights.
Registration and revalidation
Current NMC registration is essential, as an RGN, RMN or RNLD depending on the home. Revalidation runs on a three-year cycle and needs practice hours, continuing professional development, reflective accounts and confirmation.
Many homes fund training in syringe drivers, venepuncture and advanced care planning. If the vacancy does not say, ask what clinical supervision looks like and who you escalate to at three in the morning.
