What the published data covers
Adding up the published local figures across the 151 areas with data gives 26,300 on the measure this role is indexed by, which is registered manager, filled posts. The middle area records 125. That is arithmetic over local releases, not a national statistic, and areas the publisher withholds are simply absent from it.
The largest are Kent at 800, Essex at 750, Hampshire at 750, Lancashire at 600, Surrey at 600. Coverage runs across 9 regions of England.
For national context, Skills for Care reported an adult social care vacancy rate of 6.2%, about 96,000 posts, in the year to March 2026, down from 7% and the lowest since 2015-16, against a whole-economy rate of 2.2%. Registration with CQC
The registered manager application covers fitness, qualifications, experience and a criminal record check, and includes an interview with an inspector. It takes time, so providers often appoint into a manager post while the application is in progress.
Once registered you carry duties under the Health and Social Care Act regulations personally, including duty of candour and notifications. That is why the role is paid differently from any other in the building.
What providers ask for
A Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care, or a commitment to complete one, plus a track record of supervising a team in a regulated service. Providers with a service in difficulty will also want evidence you have moved a rating.
Ask about occupancy, agency spend, the last inspection report and how much autonomy you have over recruitment. Those four answers tell you more about the job than the advert will.
Before you apply
- Registration with CQC as the registered manager
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care, or working towards it
- Several years in adult social care, including supervising a team
- Enhanced DBS check, paid for by the employer
